While researching material on veterans, I came across these articles which talk about the American Indians. The articles talk about various things such as their service, a chief speaking at a church, and also meetings held at Odd Fellows Hall of the Hackingeshackey tribe, which is the origin of the city of Hackensack’s name.

Chief Oratam
has always been held in high regard with his statue placed outside the library, and these articles seem to suggest it has been that way for quiet awhile. Respect has been shown for the Indians in this area’s place in history as part of the heritage of the city of Hackensack as long as I can remember.
